V.R NAYANAR

Sri. V.R. Nayanar emerged as an outstanding personality through his  selfless social service beyond the frontiers of caste, creed and religion. His laudable and remarkable feat makes V R Nayanar the cherished scion of Kunhimangalam. V R Nayanar was the eldest son of  Smt. V. Kalyani Amma and Sri. A. Rairu Nambiar,  took birth in January 1900. His sibling includes four brothers and five sisters.  Acute famine, poverty and catastrophic epidemics were prevalent during his period. The outbreak of Malabar Commotion put the people in woes and miseries and the people were plunged in profound grief.  Poor public especially from the Scheduled Castes and Tribes, who were living in the lower layer of the society experienced the zenith of anguish and pain due to scarcity of food, shelter and medicine to survive from the contagious diseases like Pox and Cholera disrupted the region. Sri. V. R. Nayanar, B.A. graduate, had taken the vow and determined to uplift the people in the low layer of  the society.  He had served waif and forlorn by constructing orphanage and old age homes and shifting them to congenial places.  He had roamed around the country, collected food, clothing, medicines and other basic necessities, and distributed to the needy people. He enunciated and sacrificed all material life, pleasures and amenities in the life and stood as a pharos for the downtrodden.  He is considered to be a shining pole star in the state for his selfless and impeccable deed and untiring contribution for the upliftment of weaker sections of society. While acknowledging Sri.V.R. Nayanar, the renowned writer, Sri. Thikkodian opined "About Fifty Years ago, Kunhimangalam was the nucleus of Malabar Cultural development", Thikkodian reminiscences his teacher, leader and comrade. When the dangerous epidemic Cholera flare-up the Malabar territory during 1943-1944, it sowed the seed of mass devastation and genocide of human beings. During that time, modern medical treatment was not available.  In that period V R Nayanar appeared in each and every hutment of the poor with the words of solace as an angel descended from the heaven.  He offered free medical treatment and rescued many from the deathly stage.  He was also actively involved in all humanitarian activities at times of miseries such as flood, civil war, internal chaos and confusions. Later he had also established orphanage in Kozhikode, Ponnani, Dharmadam and Payangadi (Pazhayangadi) and repatriated orphans. This illustrious philanthropist deserves all the honours in recognition of his relentless social work.
