TRANSPORT

In the beginning of the 20th century there were only four horse-carts and a few bullock carts in Payyanur.  The first motor bus came to Payyanur in 1938.  This bus, owned by Narayanan Nair, was operated from Perumba to Kuppam.  The only roads in Payyanur at that time were Payyanur-Railway station road, Payyanur-Govt. Hospital road, and Payyanur-Perumba road.

In 1947, NKBT Company started a bus service from Payyanur to Aravanchal.  In 1948, to overcome the technical difficulties faced by the bus owners, many small operators joined together to form a company called NS&NMBC.  Boat Services were there from Kotty to Perumbatta and Perumba to Kaithapram.

The Perumba Bridge came into existence in 1964, which started a new era in the progress of Payyanur. New roads were built at various parts of Payyanur.  Motor cars and Auto-rickshaws conquered these roads.
