THAMBAN VAIDYAR (1913 - 1970)

Thamban Vaidyar was a celebrity in Kunhimangalam Village for his handsome appearance and astute personality.  Vaidyar had a prominent role in germinating Communist Movement and the Farmers Association in Kunhimangalam.  In other words, these associations were clustered under the strain and pain of Thamban Vaidyar.  Vaidyar set his foot in Kunhimangalam in association with his mentors Vishnubharatheeyan and A.V.  He had lead farmers conferences under the leadership of A.V to unite and work for the downtrodden farmers to elevate them from

the exploitation of landlords prevalent in the society during the period.

Thamban, the only son of Kattoor Kannan and Kanayi Pateniyil Manikkam, was born with gifted knowledge, sharp common sense, memory, courage and charisma.

Unfortunately, he lost his mother when he was a 3 months old  and then he has grown up under the shelter of P Kannan, one of his maternal brother. Vaidyar has a multi-faceted personality as an instant poet, a speaker, magician, rustic physician, and an artist of "kalari payattu", a martial art in Kerala. He was second to none

for his rare and conglomerate talent in that era.  In addition to all he had a quest

for scientific research.  He believed that copper can be transformed to gold and had to face threat from the authority  for his conducting such an experiment.

He had exhorted farmers against hoarding and black marketing.  He was absconding for the renowned Karivallor Event in 1946 and was in the hit list of Police.  He had an instinct to disguise from his appearance as beard man and long hairs at one time and

clean shaved once the face and then the head and it helped him to miraculously escape from the Police several times.

P Govindan, P V Sreedharan alias Sithan, T Govindan, V Damodaran, Khan Abbas, C Kannan were his close accomplices.  He was elected as the Panchayat Member of Kunhimangalam in 1964 and he adorned this position until his death, 1970.   In recognition of his social commitments and work for the common cause, he had even snatched the vote of close relatives of his rival candidate.

At the end of his life, he was effected by many ailment and he took his last breath in the Kankanadi Hospital near Mangalore. This versatile genius, Kunhimangalam ever witnessed died in April 6th 1970.
