Kunhimangalam is a nearby Panchayath of Payyanur. Beautiful landscapes and lush greenery, magnificence of Ezhimala hillock in the visible span, caressed by the river in the north west, abounded with flourished coconut trees, hillocks, lawns at the east - this scenario illustrates the gorgeous small village known as Kunhimangalam. This village locates in the north end of Kannur district and surrounded by the towns Payyannur and Payangadi.  The famous Ezhimala Naval Academy is just couple of kilometers away from this glorious village.

This north end piece of land of Kerala has a rich and magnificent heritage.  The archeological remaining excavated from here and nearby places prove the existence of a civilized inheritance in this area centuries ago.  The “Aduppootti Para” (Umbrella rock) and the recently found caves made of stones take us back to the centuries Old Stone Age civilization.

During the freedom struggle this small village also gave immense contributions.  The leaders like, Vishnu Bharateeyan, KA Keraleeyan, TC Narayanan Nambiar, VR Nayanar, KC Nambiar gave leadership to the national movement of Kunhimangalam.

A river called “Changoorichal” is the west boundary of this village. During the 12th century, according to historians ships from China and other countries sailed through this river.  When China’s main mode of transportation was through sea, one of their biggest ship called “Changu” anchored in this river and that is why this river is known as “Changoorichal”.  There are several legends associated with the nearby temples like “Ashtamachal”, “Madayikkavu” and this river.

Society

Abundance of agricultural activities are the importance of this village.  Widely spread paddy fields, coconut trees, cashew nut trees and areca nuts are seen everywhere.  The natural water resources available at all the three sides and fertile soil of this village intensified the agriculture and thereby business and industry. Most of the villagers are farmers and doing agriculture related jobs.  Beedi-cigar works and weaving are the other areas of employment.  Until a few years ago, Kunhimangalam was one of the few self-reliant villages of Kerala.  The vast paddy fields and vegetables farms, the earthen pots manufactured at Koyappara, the clothes made at Saliya theru, the bronze vessels and sculpture industry at Moosarikkovval, fishing from the Pullankode river, all made this village self-sufficient.  However, today like many other places of Kerala Kunhimangalam is also mostly depending upon the foreign currency from the Gulf Countries.

Kunhimangalam panchayat came into existence in 1962. Up till that time this area was known as Cheruthazham-Kunhimangalam Panchayat.  Sri. U. Kunhiraman was the first President of Kunhimangalam Panchayat.
