K. Kunhikrishnan is the former Deputy Director General of Doordarshan, India. He took charge as the Deputy Director General in 1994 and is the first Malayali to reach this position. Kunhikrishnan hails from Peralam village in Karivellur-Peralam Panchayath near Payyanur. He has successfully worked in all areas of television production, management, human resource development and training, capacity building, marketing, designing channels and in combining public service and commercial broadcasting. As a Payyanurian we can proud that our native was the head of India’s prime channel Doordarshan National Network that reaches 82 million TV homes. 

Apart from being a noted personality in the television broadcasting industry and author of several books, he held a lot of positions in several committees and juries. Some of them are:

1. Member, International Jury, II International Video Film Festival, Trivandrum, Kerala, India 2003.
2. Jury Member, CNN’s Young Journalists Award, India 2003& 2004
3. Member-Secretary, Expert Group on Marketing air time on Doordarshan and All India Radio, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India (1996-97)
4. ITU/FSE Fellowship for the International Broadcast Colloquium and WTDC 98. Valetta, Malta, March 1998.
5. Jury Member for Asia Television awards on TV documentaries, wild life, sports etc., at Bali, Indonesia, 1998 and 1999.
6. Delegate on future of television broadcasting at World Multimedia Seminars at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,( April 1998),and Chiang Mai, Thailand (February 2000).
7. Member, Selection Committee, National Foundation of India media Awards, National Foundation of India, New Delhi, 1996 to present
8. Member, Sports Study Group, ABU (Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union) representing India.
9. Member, Advisory Group on Education and Training, WWF, India.
10. Member, Board of Governors (representing Doordarshan) Media Research Users’ Council (MRUCS), Mumbai,1993-94 -2004
11. Member, Core Group for setting up the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute of India(1994) at Calcutta, India
12. Member, Joint Industry Board for Peoples Meter/Measurement system for Television Ratings (1996-97)

He has received Doordarshan Special Award for Excellence of work in Narrow casting, in 2003. The Government of France invited him as a writer and media personality in November 1998. He has received UNDP Fellowship for Broadcast Management Programme Development, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1987


Education

He graduated in Zoology from St. Joseph’s College, in 1965 and got his masters degree in 1970 from Calicut University. Kunhikrishnan Acquired Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, 1976 and Diploma in Television Production and Technical Operations from the famous Film & Television Institute of India, Pune in 1979. He got his professional trainings from Management Development Programme for Senior Administrators in Government from Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad and in Broadcast Management of Population Communication Programme from Asia Pacific Institute For Broadcasting Development, Kuala Lumpur.

Career

Before becoming the Deputy Director General he held various positions in Doordarshan as the Controller of Sales/Programmes and Director of Doordarshan Delhi Kendra. He is the first Director of Trivandrum Doordarshan, which heralded the television programming in Malayalam in 1985. He is the master mind behind the  development of Trivandrum Doordarshan from scratch to a level of the best equipped broadcasting centre that reaches all over Kerala.  He also served as the deputy director (Programmes) and Asst Station Director in various centres of Doordarshan. Kunhikrishnan worked as Assistant Editor/Junior Scientific officer at Indian Council of Agricultural Research (Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India) at New Delhi & Kasargode.


It will be interesting to know that Kunhikrishnan started his professional life as the Junior Lecture in the Department of Biology in Payyanur College from July 1965-September 1969.

An Author also….

Kunhikrishnan not only successfully worked in all areas of television broadcasting,  but proved himself as a good author also. Kunhikrishnan has published eight books namely: Kattile Kathakal, Nagna Vaanaran, Delhi, Jeevan Parinaamam, Asian Kathakal, Thakkol, Madhyamangalum Malayala Sahityavum and Mantrikapetti. He is a regular reviewer of books for publications in Malayalam; The Hindu, Sunday Mail, Indian Express and Hindustan Times, and periodicals in English and published more than 300.
He published articles in major periodicals like The Economist- London, 
Far Eastern Economic Review- Hong Kong, Asiaweek-Hong Kong, The Hindu, Economic Times, Hindustan Times, Indian Express, Mathrubhumi and Malayala Manorama.

Family

His wife Ragini is from Trichambaram, Taliparamba and have two sons. Elder one Jayadeep is a hardware engineer. He studied in Bangalore and at Hartford University USA. He is working as Hardware Design Engineer and is staying at Wter Town Boston with his wife Lakshmi. The younger one Viswanath is doing Ph. D in Mathematics at Chicago University USA.
