Kathakali
tradition of Payyanur starts from the Tazhekkattu Mana Kali Yogam.
The second Kaliyogam was at Cheruthazham, the nearby village. After this another Kaliyogam was started at
Varanakottu Illam.
. The famous trios of
Kathakali, Chandu Pankikkar, Chindan Panikkar and Ambu Panikkar were behind this
Kaliyogam. It was here the world famous artist
Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair (in photo) was trained . The Vengayil
Kaliyogam also gave many contributions to the art of Kathakali. In 1960s The Payyanur
Kalodya Sangam Kathakali Yogam was formed.

Kathakali:
Kathakali is the
traditional dance of Kerala. Kathakali is a group
presentation, in which dancers take various roles in performances
traditionally based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the
two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
This art form has a
unique style of dress code and make-up. The dance form
starts only in the late evening and continues till midnight. The
dancer conveys most of the gestures through his facial
expression . Hand movements, body movements and foot work for this
art requires vigorous training . Dancing with large head dress
, heavy costumes and long hours of patience make-up is the
uniqueness of this art.
The music of this art has
two drums known as the chenda and the maddalam, along with cymbals
and another percussion instrument, the ela taalam and the usual
vocal singers. The style of singing particular to Kathakali is
called Sopaanam. |
