Many times my PC is showing many program errors. So I'm thinking to format the hard disk and reinstall Windows. Could any one in the IT forum tell me what are the steps I've to do to format my PC. My PC is P 800Mhz with 20 GB HDD and the OS is Windows ME.

Formatting a Hard Disk is a thing to do very carefully. I will explain you the brief steps. But don’t try to format your PC unless you understand all the procedures well.
First, Take back-up of all your document files in floppy diskettes or CD Rom.
Using Windows ME, format a floppy drive with the system files on it. To do this you open MY COMPUTER on the Windows desktop and right click on the 3-1/2' floppy icon. Select ‘FORMAT’ then QUICK FORMAT and then COPY SYSTEM FILES which will create a bootable floppy disk.
Copy FDISK.EXE, MSCDEX.EXE, HIMEM.SYS, FORMAT.EXE files from your Windows folder to a Floppy.
Reboot your system. Don’t remove the Floppy from its drive.
When A:\ appears after boot, type in FORMAT C: /S and press enter, select 'yes' when prompted. This command will format the hard drive and make it bootable. Everything on the C: drive will be destroyed. Once it is finished formatting, reboot the system using the boot disk.
Insert your CDROM drive driver diskette. And run SETUP.EXE
Once the A:\ comes back put the Windows ME CD in the drive. Type in D:\ and press enter.
This will bring the CD-ROM drive on-line. Next, type in SETUP and press enter.
You are now on your way to reinstalling WINDOWS ME again. Just follow the prompts and within about an hour you will have reinstalled Windows.
I didn’t mention many other steps involved in this process that I think you know it. I explained only the basic procedure. So take care before formatting your PC.

From where can I learn Flash in the net freely?

IT Committee :

The best way to learn basics of Flash is go through the Tutorial provided in Flash 5.0. It provides basic information on Tweening, Animation and all. There are many tutorials available in the net also. Go through flashkit.com,flashlite.net,macromedia.com etc. download sample .fla files and see how it works. For programming in Flash you have to learn Javascript also.
Cheers :))

Concerning the explanation in formating the C Drive, it was mentioned to format the floppy and copy the system files into the floppy. Would it not be easier to format the floppy as system floppy with the command format a:/s instead of formating it first and copying the system files?

Hi sukuetta,
U have another simple way to make the bootdisk..just go to the control panel/Add remove programs you will find a startup disk button..click on the button and insert a formatted floppy..it will create boot disk for u with necessary files..
format a:/s will not help u..

I hope u know what does defragmentation is used for.
When u create many files on ur disk, it uses various methods of allocation on the disk. There are many methods of allocation. After this when u delete these files it causes a problem called Fragmentation. There are two types of Fragmentation namely Internal & External Fragmentation. It results in a condition that makes the freed space can't be reused for further allocation.U can solve this problem using Defragmenter utility in Windows. This utility scans all such unusable space on ur hard drive caused due to fragmentation. And using various other techniques to make that space available for allocation. Using defragmenter cant increase ur computer speed to a further extend. Eventhough there may be some. But this will be very minute. U can defragment ur drives once in a fortnight if u are a regular user. Dont think that it will increase ur processing speed
soon.

Hi
i installed Windows 98 first.10 Gb each given for c,d,e, and f drives. Then i removed and formatted F:,and installed Soalris. Now i wanted to recover my windows data, since ot is not at all going to windows.I tried thru a boot floppy, but didnt work out.Actually my aim was to make a dual bootable system.
hope this clarification is enough.Thanks

See i think ur problem is that Solaris had overwritten the Master boot record(mbr) of windows. This had happened due to ur carelessness during Solaris installation, it does ask how do u want ur system to boot from during installation. U could have selected the Solaris option and thus windows mbr got overwritten.
Now there are two solutions:
1. If u are in desperate need of Windows and not Solaris :
Then just use this command : fdisk/mbr
So ur windows mbr will be restored.
Then u will have windows functional and Solaris as current windows partition(remain unaccessed)
2. Else if u want both and a dual boot:
Search on the net for loaders which detects Windows and Solaris. This could solve ur problem and u can have dual boot supported.

See Mr. Jayan, There are utilities which runs on the system level which detects the partitions and the operating systems involved and provides dual boot facility. I have downloaded 2 of such utilities. And i can mail it to u, if u could contact me on the following email id.
sanieeshnarayanan@rediffmail.com
But u will have to use these utilities on ur own risk.
