Geography:

Payyanur is situated at the north end of Kannur district and is surrounded by rivers.  The Perumba Puzha (known as perumbuzha or vannathi puzha), punnakka puzha, thattar puzha are the main rivers.  Apart from these rivers there are many smaller canals like Naranga thodu.  As a result these rivers act as the borders of Payyanur Municipality. Perumba bridge on the national highway separates Payyanur from Kunhimangalam Panchayat, Olavara bridge divides Payyanur and Trikaripur, Palathira bridge on the NH 17 separates Payyanur from Karivellur, Kankol-Aalapatamba Panchayat is separated from Payyanur by Karinkeel bridge and the Punnakadavu bridge divides of Payyanur and Ramantali.

Minerals:

In the coastal area, the comparatively less fertile secondary soil is seen.  Some parts of Payyanur and Korom is said to have bauxite deposits but since the percentage of alumina is only 40 to 45% it is not economical to mine these.  The soil of the beaches is containing monazite, limonite, sircon, etc.  Some areas of Payyanur have high deposits of lime-shell, which is used in the manufacturing of white cement and such products.

Clay is the another main natural resource.  Clay is being excavated from areas like Korom, Karivellur and Perumba.  Clay is the main raw material in the manufacturing of bricks, tiles, ceramics, earthen pots etc.  (The biggest industry of Payyanur is nothing but the tile factory at Kotty)

Another important natural deposit is Laterite.  The soft and red coloured rock seen commonly in many parts of Payyanur.  Unlike other parts of Kerala where bricks are used as the main material in the construction works, laterite stone is used in this part of the state.
