Thullal
|
| The
dance form of Thullal created by Kunjan Nambiar was much
popular in Payyanur. The
thullal tradition starts with Appade Achan who was an expert
all the three forms of thullal- Ottan thullal, Seethangan
thullal and Parayan thullal.
Appade Ramanasan, PK Poduval and Karivellur Kumaranasan
were very famous all over Kerala.
In the new generation, Krishnan Kutty is a promising
artiste. |

Classical
Dances
|
Payyanur
dominates in the field of classical dances also.
We are very much proud of VP.Dhananjayan
and his wife Shantha Dhananjayan for their remarkable contributions to the field of Classical
Dance. Late Natanam Sivapalan was another
feather on the glorious crown of Payyanur's heritage. The
dancers like N.V.Krishnan and Kalamandalam Latha are
also famous and they give training for the
new generation in this field. Many times the most coveted
titles of "kalathilakam" and "kalaprathibha"
of School Youth festivals were obtained by the disciples of
these dance teachers. The
institutions like "Bharata Kalanjali","Lasya
Kalakshetra" are to be specilly mentioned for their
contributions to the dance forms like Bharatanatyam,
Mohiniyattam etc. The
new venture to promote classical dance by VP Dhananjayan is
getting ready at Kaithapram
which is not too far from Payyanur town.
It is supposed become a university of arts similar to
the famous Kerala Kalamandalam and Kalakshetra of Adayar,
Chennai.

Kalaripayattu
|
|
Payyanur
has a rich heritage in the martial arts like "kalaripayattu".
The Kalari tradition of Payyanur starts with Kunhambu
Tirumumbu of Tazhekattu Mana.
Kunnaru Vadhyan Namboothiri, Avaronnan Gurukal,
Kandangali Poonthuruthi Kottam Gurukal, Annur Choovatta
Gurukal, AK Kumaran Gurukal were some of the famous 'kalari-experts'
of the past. They
were expert in the use of "urumi'(the long sword with
narrow blade), spear, 'paricha'(the round shield used to
defend against enemy's attack with a sword or spear), and
fencing.
According
to the old stories there were many warriors in Payyanur.
Kodakkal Kunhikannan of Korom, Uthamantil
Chathappan(was the Commander of Chirakkal Kovilakam) Kallidil
Kannan, Kandambath Unnamman, Uthamantil Chirukandan were some
of the famous warriors. The stories of their daring acts are
exchanged to new generations through the ballads, folksongs
and theyyam etc.
There
were many acrobatic experts in Payyanur during the past. The
great technique of "Njaninmel kali" (walking on the
tightrope) was originated by the Puthiyaramban House of
Payyanur. Puthiyaramban
Gurukal was really a miracle of that time.
